Families

At Hudson UMC, worship isn’t just for grown-ups. We actively encourage kids to participate, too. Every Sunday, the service includes a children’s sermon and then children's time with a lesson and games for kids from ages 4 years old through 3rd Grade. You’ll also find children’s worship bulletins and “activity bags” (for ages 3-8) hanging on the tree just outside the sanctuary door.

Childcare during Worship

Childcare is available for infants through age 3 during Worship. Child care is also offered during the Sunday School hour for infants through age 2. Each child will need to be signed in and signed out by a parent or guardian.

Children’s Sermon Time during 9:30 worship

During the worship service, at the time of the sermon, kids ages 4 years through Grade 5 are invited to leave the worship service for a brief separate time of stories, games, or activities designed to teach the same morning’s sermon lesson at their own level of understanding. Kids return to the service following the sermon. This practice helps to provide conversation starters and a common language for families to process the message of the day together.

Weekly Parent Communications

We know that the key to nurturing a long-lasting faith in a child is faith shared and nurtured by parents seven days a week, through the ups and downs of everyday life. Our parents are supported in their efforts by weekly communications and resources related to our Sunday school curriculum that equip them to extend lessons and faith conversations into their homes.

Intergenerational Ministry

Today’s research tells us that when generations worship, learn, and serve together, a valuable exchange takes place in the form of shared wisdom, fresh perspectives, and new opportunities for growth and introspection on both sides. For the young, a significant benefit arising from this type of faith community is a felt sense of belonging. They know they are valued for what they bring to the life of a church, not just for the future, but today. This is fertile soil for faith to grow, thrive, and to last.

Children and Youth Worship Service

Once a year, Hudson United Methodist Church’s children and youth, Preschool through Grade 12, design and lead their own worship service for the congregation. With guidance from their adult leaders, students select a theme, write and lead the worship liturgy, sermon, and prayers, and prepare the musical offerings. This experience provides both educational and spiritual enrichment as well as valuable preparation for church leadership.

Children and Youth Opportunities for Leadership and Service

Children and youth are invited to serve in the worship service as acolytes, liturgists, intergenerational choir members, instrumental and vocal soloists, and audiovisual booth volunteers.

  • Appalachia Service Project (ASP)
ASP is an adult and youth mission project. For 50 years, Hudson United Methodist Church has sent teams to Appalachia for one week in the summer to help make homes warmer, safer, and drier for people in need.
Intergenerational Sunday School Classes

Adults and Youth gather occasionally for an intergenerational Sunday school class. This format allows adults who may be set in familiar patterns of thinking to be newly enlightened by the uncomplicated faith of earlier years. And young people grappling with new ideas likewise benefit by hearing from someone who has tested those ideas in life.

All-Church Family Fellowship Events

Evening and weekend events are planned throughout the year for all ages to gather for fellowship, fun, and valuable relationship-building.

    • Seasonal Community Events
    • Halloween Trunk or Treat
    • Christmas Gingerbread House Making Party
    • Easter Egg Hunt

Youth Program

Confirmation Class
In Confirmation class, we study United Methodist beliefs, history, theology, and doctrine. Confirmation class is also a spiritual experience that encourages our youth to explore their own personal faith. This class is designed for Grade 7 and above and is offered every other year. Please contact the Director of Family Ministries for more information.

Additional Children’s Activities

Bible Workshop
In Grade 3, students receive the gift of a Bible from Hudson United Methodist Church. They are then invited to attend a fun activity day to help them learn how to use their Bibles. Students are encouraged to attend Bible Workshop every year! Any students (Grade 3 and above) who do not have their own Bibles and would like one are asked to contact the Director of Family Ministries.

Safe Sanctuaries – A Safe Place For Kids

HUMC maintains a safe environment for vulnerable persons (children, youth, or adults whose behavior indicates that he or she is mentally or emotionally incapable of caring for themselves or their interests, or who may be unable to protect themselves from abuse, neglect, exploitation, sexual abuse, or emotional abuse by others). Following guidelines set by the General Conference of the United Methodist Church, our Safe Sanctuaries policy mandates that everyone with the potential to be entrusted with vulnerable persons in church activities receive formal training and take a refresher course every three years.
