Missions and Service Opportunities

HUMC conducts several ongoing projects that show Christian love in action—locally, regionally, and internationally. For more information on any of these projects, contact Paul Brown.
ASP
Appalachia Service Project: For more than 45 years, volunteers from HUMC have helped rebuild and repair homes in economically ravaged towns in Kentucky, West Virginia, or Virginia. Each summer, for one full week, teams of adults and teenagers build Christian relationships with families in the region while working to make their homes warmer, safer, and drier. Our entire church family comes together to support and prepare for this annual endeavor.
Hudson Community Service Association
Hudson Community Service Association was started in 1944 to help returning World War II servicemen and their families. Over the years its mission has evolved into providing assistance to residents living within the Hudson City School District. Food, staples, and emergency funds are distributed to residents in need.
Habitat for Humanity
As an active member of the Hudson Coalition, HUMC helps build a new home for a Summit County family every year. Volunteers work onsite, and financial contributions raised through Alternative Father’s Day Gift Cards support the project.
Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) Puerto Rico
HUMC has sent teams to serve in Puerto Rico in 2019, 2020, and 2021. In 2017, Hurricanes Maria and Irma caused substantial damage in the region, and volunteers are needed to help the Methodist Church of Puerto Rico as they recover from both storms.
United Methodist Volunteers In Mission (UMVIM) is a grassroots movement within The United Methodist Church designed to provide an official channel for people to offer their skills and talents for Christian service at home and around the world on short-term journeys.
Feed My Sheep
On the second Friday of every month, volunteers from HUMC serve hot lunch to homeless and needy adults at the Church of the Redeemer in Cuyahoga Falls. We also support the program with donations of toiletries, used men’s clothing, and new socks and undergarments.
OPEN M
OPEN M is a Christian non-profit organization that serves more than 40,000 individuals with food, health, and employment services- all intended to create pathways out of poverty. Located in the Summit Lake neighborhood of Akron, OPEN M leverages a community alliance of churches businesses, and more than 1,000 volunteers to offer programs to those in need. The mission of OPEN M, a Christian ministry, is to provide pathways out of poverty by feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, and strengthening the community.
Other Projects
HUMC also supports the Battered Women’s Shelter of Summit & Medina Counties; Lighthouse of Hope; Berea Children’s Home; Flat Rock Homes; Western Reserve Outreach Center; Heifer International; and Church World Service. Many other missions are supported through United Women in Faith.
